I still remember as a child, when I found out what an mmorpg was, was the most exciting day of my life? No, I wouldn’t say it was, But it ranks among the best I have ever had. The idea of playing a game, with other people! Up until then all I had was a few single player and split screen N-64 games. Not exactly the most fun, but it passed the time and encouraged my ever growing game addiction to develop.

My first mmorpg, Risk Your Life For The Emperor (RYL) 2. I remember it as clear as day, popping in the 30-day trial cd-rom I got in a magazine, big sparkling eyes as I watched the install bar inch across my screen and random images of gameplay flashing before me.
RYL.. Now that was a real mmorpg. A real sandbox, do-what-you-like game with thousands of players on a handful of servers and a medium sized city were you could open shop and sell your items with a single tap of the mouse. Now a days it’s run to the auction house, Stare blankly at thousands of pages of items for price comparison, post an item, get undercut, post it again for less’ sort of thing.
That is just one example of how the world of online gaming is changing.. But yeah.. RYL, now that was a game to be played and proud of.
The type of games you get now are all cookie cutter, World of Warcraft cloned or shotty English translated Korean based cash grabs. If they even have a story it’s usually generic, redone, copyrighted or just plain bad.
If a bad story line doesn’t get you angry, how about the types of quests they have these days? “Go kill 1000 sheep and get back to me for 10xp and a free hat that does nothing.”
Mind you, these can be the most challenging quests of them all. Trying to stay awake and keeping your heart beating while mindlessly beating on helpless pixely sheep takes a lot of brain power.. Oh and lets not forget that part where you need to spend 10$ on the ingame item mall for that special quest in order to get to the sheep to finish the quest! How lame is that?
I could go on for hours about how bad games are getting, but I believe the few points I have spoke about here will have you nodding your head in agreement, and anger. Moral of the rant, we need game publishers to try harder, Let more indie developers who have great ideas take over the market and let the “big boys” die out…
